FAQ

What form of martial arts do you teach at West Vancouver Martial Arts?
At West Vancouver Martial Arts we are fortunate to have instructors who have trained and competed internationally and who have taken their experiences and blended them to create a martial arts style that combines the values of traditional martial arts with the most modern and effective techniques available today. We host an ever evolving style that implements techniques from many forms of martial arts but the base of our style stems from traditional karate and kickboxing with elements of grappling being added as well.
What age group do you offer classes for?
We offer classes for all age ranges starting 3 years old. If you feel you are interested in martial arts do not let age be what holds you back. If you are interested in trying it’s never too late to start.
  • Kids Program 3-6
  • Youth Program 7-12
  • Teen Program 13-17
  • Adult Program 18+

How often should I attend classes?
Our martial arts curriculum is based on a 2x per week program however if you are looking to get into better shape or are interested in committing further to your martial arts training there are opportunities available for training every day.
What should I wear on my first day?
On your first day wear clothes that you will be comfortable being active in. If you are participating in the cardio kickboxing class we will have boxing gloves for you to borrow. If you are participating in the martial arts program we will have a uniform to lend you on your first day, which you can purchase later if you decide to continue.
How safe is it to learn martial arts for me or my kids?
Learning martial arts is dangerous!!! But not for you, for anybody who decides to challenge you to a duel.
How will training at West Vancouver Martial Arts benefit my child?
Martial arts has many benefits both physical and mental. On the physical side, martial arts will help to improve coordination, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. But equally and perhaps even more important to us is helping to create students who go out and have a positive influence in their community. At West Vancouver Martial Arts we strive to instil core values such as respect, discipline, hard work and humility into are students all things that we believe will help them to succeed in life inside and outside of martial arts.
My child has a learning or physical disability or is special needs. Can they participate in martial arts?
We take all students on a case by case basis however we have experience teaching students with a wide range of backgrounds and have had great success so far. There are several options available so if you would like to bring them in please contact us and we will arrange a trial class for them to participate in.
Will martial arts make my child more aggressive?
At West Vancouver Martial Arts we strictly prohibit violence/aggressive behaviour outside of the dojo. We enforce that the techniques that we teach are to be used solely for self-defence. We also believe in teaching our students how to control and manage their emotions as it imperative to us that we are not simply teaching people to be more dangerous but in fact are teaching them to be more controlled.
Do you Spar in class?
Sparring is a part of our martial arts program (not Cardio Kickboxing) however if a student is uncomfortable with sparring nobody will ever be forced to partake in the sparring. The sparring that would occur in regular classes would be very controlled contact and for the purpose of feeling the effects of the techniques learned; however, if a student has desires for competition then there are classes available for them to further their sparring experience.
What if I have never tried martial arts or I’m out of shape?
We have classes available for all levels of skill and fitness. We believe that martial arts can benefit everybody and in order for that to be true it needs to be accessible to everybody. If you have never done martial arts before, great! That is what we are here to help change. If you feel you are out of shape, no problem, we are happy to help get you started on your journey to a healthier lifestyle. We will always be here to help give you a push in the right direction but are always willing to modify exercises to the students current abilities.
I’d like to try a class, how do I get started?
The best thing to do is to come in a give it a try. No amount of words or videos can replace the feeling of really trying the class. We have a no commitment 2 class trial option available for $20 where we will provide you with everything you will need to participate in the classes. After you have experienced the classes and met the instructors you can then decide what your martial arts journey will look like from there.
